Dirt cups are a childhood classic, and now they’ve gone vegan!  Irresistible chocolate mousse, crunchy cookie crumbles, and everyone’s favorite—gummy worms!  This will instantly transport you to when you were 4 years old! PIN IT NOW!

Dirt cups are a childhood classic!  Chocolate pudding, crunchy cookie crumbs, gummy worms—what’s not to like….if you’re 4?!  A dirt cup is also pretty darn delicious for adults!  I use my Vegan Chocolate Mousse as the base, and then doctor it up with my favorite Enjoy Life Double Chocolate cookies.  So delicious!  The finishing touch is of course….gummy worms!  There are several vegan gummy candies available in grocery stores these days, but my favorite are Surf Sweets.  Their sour worms are great, and are a lot of fun in these vegan dirt cups.

A Walk Down Blog Memory Lane

This recipe is an oldie but goodie (I originally published it over 3 years ago!).  I had intended on doing a big “select all—>delete” when I came in to update the pictures, but reading through my old notes is always good for my own perspective.  I’ve been blogging for 5 1/2 years now, and while my blog is first and foremost a recipe collection, it is actually so much more than that.  It really reads as part diary, and I love to go back to my older recipes to see how things have changed, to be reminded of how I first created a recipe, what my inspiration was, and often to remember what my kids were up to (and for those who would rather not read the commentary, I now include a “jump to recipe” button at the top of my new posts!).  As so many parents know, the days seemingly stand still, but the years are short, and often you look back and things are a blur.  It feels to me like David was just born yesterday, yet earlier this week his big 7 year old self was out on the front steps scraping the ice for us, unprompted.  Here’s an excerpt from my original post, 3+ years ago:

As any mom knows, time is capable of standing still and rushing by all at the same time.  My Moms’ Fellowship leader always says, “the days are long, but the years are short.”  Up until David’s 3rd birthday a part of me always wished that time could slow down, that he could stay a baby for a little while longer.  And then 3 hit.  And I have never been more eager for him to grow up! 3 ½ seems particularly bad.  I think that a new brother and the transition to preschool must have something to do it, but man, some of these days are real doozies.  We had a particularly long week last week.  On Friday David and I agreed that we were going to have a great day, full of patience and obedience.  So I decided to get in the kitchen with David and do what we do best together—cook!

^^^ Sweet 3 year old David!  One (sloooow) blink and he’s 7!

Last week my current 3 1/2 year old and I dusted off my Dirt Cup recipe, and had fun creating a video to show how to make it.  Jonny went through a long and difficult phase this past summer and fall, and I was kind of at my wits end trying to understand him and his behavior.  And then one day he woke up and my sweet baby was back.  It’s so good for me to see that Jonny is following in his big brother’s footsteps—both the terrible threenager stage and his love for working in the kitchen with me.

I hope you enjoy these Vegan Dirt Cups!  They are a perfect fun snack, but also are a great party treat too (see how we dressed them up into “Construction Trucks” for Jonny’s second birthday)!  They’d even be a fun way to celebrate Earth Day in April!  However you do it, I’d love to see pictures of how your Dirt Cups turn out!  Post them to social media and tag me so that I can see!  {#frieddandelions // @frieddandelions}

Dirt Cups

Ingredients

  • 1 batch chocolate mousse (see below for link)
  • 1 package vegan chocolate cookies (I like Enjoy Life)
  • 1 package vegan gummy candies (I like Surf Sweets sour worms)

Instructions

  •  Place the cookies (as many as you want—a half package is a good start!) into the food processor and pulse until your cookies are crumbled (but still coarse).
  • Using small clear glasses (about 4 ounce size), alternate layering cookie crumbs and mousse, sneaking in worms as you see fit.
  • Garnish the top with more cookie crumbs and a few worms peaking out.
  • Serve to your favorite little ones—they’ll love it—and you will too!
