Do you have a favorite restaurant? One where you can walk in and everyone knows you? No, not Cheers, but sort of like that. For us it is our neighborhood Mexican restaurant, Mi Mexico, where we go at least once a month.
^^^ as seen on Instagram last month
We’ve always gone regularly—we were just 2 blocks away in our old condo, and can still walk now (gotta burn off that dinner!). We took David there for our first big venture out of the house after he was born—at maybe 6 days old? The staff has watched him grow up over the past few years and always greet him by name—”Hola David!” In fact, because of this David calls it “Hola Chips”—they always say “hola” and hand us a basket of chips. Seems logical!
I figured it was about time I wrote a quick post about Mi Mexico—I’ve written posts about all kinds of other places we go, so why not our regular spot? They have a “Healthy Choice” menu which is usually where I start my order. I guess being a regular has some perks—I usually make a few substitutions and they are very accommodating! I like the veggie fajitas, avocado tostada, Mucho Flaco Burrito (very skinny, although the burrito is not!), and the spinach enchiladas. I always make sure to specify white rice. They have two rice varieties—Mexican rice which is cooked in chicken stock and white rice which is not. Both have veggies tossed in with them—looks like the frozen mix of veggies. I also ask for whole beans—pinto or black are both fine with me. I just don’t want the refried beans—who needs all of that extra oil? You might also want to check to make sure the beans aren’t cooked with any pork (not too common, but it does happen)! I also make sure to specify no cheese or sour cream.
For David I either split a platter with him—like the fajitas pictured—or order a side of white rice and whole black beans with tortillas to make tacos. He also loves his chips and salsa!
Last week when we went I ordered a whole side dish of curtido, the Mexican coleslaw that comes on the side of most of their dishes. They brought me a platter, for $.99, and I ate almost all of it! It was delicious and you can bet that I’ll be making my own soon and sharing the recipe with you!
Since we can walk we usually splurge on a half carafe of Sangria—so yummy! Makes the steep hill back to our house that much steeper but it’s worth it 🙂
I will say that even though I order from the “healthy” menu, it’s still a pretty heavy meal (when I order what I want—I’m sure you could make healthier choices like skipping the basket of chips!). But we love it so much, and it’s a nice loud family restaurant which is perfect for David, so it’s a great treat for our family. What is your favorite local treat?
