While it’s a lot of fun to spend time in the kitchen making masterpieces, they aren’t usually the foods that appeal the most to my toddler. He would prefer it to be fruit, and easy for him to eat. After he went nuts over the Hungry Caterpillar a few weeks ago I wanted to make another fun fruit snack. I saw this idea on Pinterest last night and knew it would be the perfect addition to lunch—race cars!
I made mine with apples and kiwi berries. I had intended to use grapes, but it wasn’t until after I got home from the grocery store that I realized they weren’t quite fresh. So kiwi grapes it was! Other ideas for the wheels are bananas, blueberries, and olives (not a great flavor match, but David adores them!).
I used an apple for the body of the car, but a pear would be good too! I cut around the core of my apple, leaving a square shaped core (cut the 4 sides of the apple off). Then I cut those pieces into slices.
To assemble the fruit snacks I used a piece of spaghetti that I broke into pieces, after threading it through the sliced fruits. It worked so well, and was easier and safer than breaking toothpicks. And, even though David didn’t eat any of it, at least it would have been ok if he did.
The pictures are proof of what a hit this was—David busted in while I was still taking pictures, and at one point just picked up the plate and took it to the other room. So, I apologize that I don’t have a ton of super clear pictures, but I think the lack of pictures says it all!
