As I have told you many, many times before, I love, love, love traveling to the Caribbean to visit Irving’s old stomping grounds.  He grew up on the magical islands of Puerto Rico AND the Dominican Republic.  Oh what I wouldn’t give to go there right now!  One of the most beautiful areas in the world—the landscape, the music, the people, the food!  On one of my early visits to Puerto Rico, to meet Irving’s family, I noticed that all of the restaurants served a pink dipping sauce alongside the fried delicacies on the menu.  Salsa rosada….or Mayochup!

What is Mayochup?

Salsa Rosada, or Mayochup is exactly what it sounds like—a sauce made of mayonaise and ketchup.  The addition of lime juice, garlic, and salt boosts the flavor, making it the perfect dipping sauce.  It’s commonly served with tostones (fried green plantains), yucca fries, and my favorite—surrullitos (think fried cornbread….but so much better)!  Salsa Rosada is also great for drizzling on top of tacos—one of my kids’ favorite ways to enjoy it! (Pretty sure Jonny would just lick it out of the bowl if I let him!)

Where is Salsa Rosada from?

Salsa Rosada is popular across many parts of Latin America.  It goes by different names, including mayoketchup, mayochup, and even “salsa golf.”  There’s even an American version called “Fry Sauce.”

Mayochup….but make it vegan!

The mayochup served in most restaurants in Puerto Rico isn’t vegan, as it uses traditional mayonaise.  But it’s so easy to veganize at home using your favorite vegan mayo.  We love Follow Your Heart!
