I have a winner of an idea for you today! When I was a kid bacon cheeseburgers were all the rage. Quarter pounder bacon cheeseburgers to be exact. It was my standing order at any burger restaurant. And then they came out with those weird cheese filled hot dogs—you know, the kind that would burst with artificial cheese sauce when you took a bite? The 90’s were full of “good” ideas. Flash forward 20 years later and I found myself thinking about how I could combine the two ideas and make a vegan version. And the Bacon Cheese Dog was born!*
Hot diggity dog!
My friends over at Lightlife emailed me earlier this summer, asking if I would be interested in trying out their hot dogs and sharing a recipe with all of you! Well, I’d actually tried their hot dogs before…and their bacon too! Lightlife products are “meat without the middleman, made directly from plants, and not the animals who eat them.” Efficient, right? Their Smart Dogs are gluten free, vegan, certified non GMO, and yummy! My kids love them! Their Smart Bacon is also vegan and certified non GMO! Summer BBQs!
Lightlife Smart Dogs would be a perfect grill item for your 4th of July BBQ! Grill up some dogs and make a DIY hot dog bar with lots of fun toppings—I’m thinking guacamole, Elote Corn (corn dog, anyone?), or even some yummy homemade ketchup!
Bacon Cheese Dogs
Or, make things really fancy and try my Bacon Cheese Dogs! I simply grilled up some Smart Dogs, made a batch of my Queso Dip, and topped with some grilled Smart Bacon. These were SO good! I made some in the middle of the afternoon so that I could photograph and couldn’t help myself—I had an entire hot dog at 3 o’clock in the afternoon!

Bacon Cheese Dog
Ingredients
- 1 package of Lightlife Smart Dogs
- 1 batch of Vegan Queso Dip (see link in notes)
- 1 package of Lightlife Smart Bacon
- hot dog buns
Instructions
- Prepare the queso dip according to instructions and set aside.
- Prepare the Smart Bacon according to package instructions—I pan sear mine until slightly brown and crisp on each side. Once cooked, chop into small pieces and set aside.
- Grill your Smart Dogs according to package instructions. If you don't want to grill, you can also cook your Smart Dogs in a skillet, turning to brown all sides.
To assemble your Bacon Cheese Dog:
- Place Smart Dog into bun.
- Drizzle with vegan queso dip.
- Sprinkle with Smart Bacon bits.
- ENJOY!
