This cinnamon sugar toast topping is an instant trip back to your childhood! It’s our favorite way to start the morning…with a cup of coffee, of course!

Growing up, it was usually my mom who did most of the cooking.  My dad spent most of his hours at work, or commuting an hour each way to his office in the next state over, while my mom was at home with all 5 of us kids.  But when he was home on the weekends he tried to help out with the non stop cooking that was required to feed a family of 7.  He was (in)famous for making 15 bean soup mixes on Sunday nights.  He made Saturday morning pancakes.  And he made CINN SUG.  CINN SUG.  My dad’s abbreviation for the cinnamon sugar mix he kept in the cupboard for toast.  I can still picture the bottle now—a reused and recycled spice jar (hey, way ahead of his time!), neatly labeled in his all caps lettering—my dad’s handwriting could be made into a font (and yes, my dad has been “yelling” in all caps since before it was a thing!)!  CINN SUG.  I’m sure that this mix was pretty common in kitchen cupboards around the country—it’s nothing new or ground breaking.  But to this day, a slice of toast with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top is ultimate comfort food.

Cinnamon Sugar Toast Topping

I’ve made my dad’s cinn sug mix for years and years now, but never really paid attention to the proportions.  This past fall I decided to figure out the proportions so that I could share it with all of you.  It could not be more simple.  The entire ingredient list is in the name.  Just sugar.  And cinnamon.  Done.

Breakfasts are kind of spotty in our house.  Back when my children actually attended school mornings were rushed and there was not a whole lot of emphasis on breakfast.  Maybe a bagel.  Maybe.  Weekends are a different story, and we usually spend a little more time on breakfasts—waffles, cinnamon rolls, etc.  Jonny and Irving prefer a savory breakfast—9 times out of 10 Jonny will request leftover pasta before daring to eat something sweet in the morning.  And yet, when I started making cinnamon sugar for myself the boys started asking for it took.  Even Jonny.  He now requests daily that I make him some “cinn sug toast like Grandpa” for breakfast….and afternoon snacks!  Honestly, what’s not to love?
