Muddy Buddies are a classic American snack.  I introduced my kids to it a few years ago and it’s been a hit with them ever since.  We like to: eat it out of a bowl like cereal, tuck it in lunchboxes for a school snack, grab a handful from the storage bowl when we pass through the kitchen, and even use it as a topping on ice cream!  It’s sweet and chocolatey, with a satisfying crunch.  It makes a huge batch, and is great for serving up when friends come over.  We are just a year away from entering the teen years and I am finding myself hosting more and more kiddos at our house, hanging out, playing the Switch, and running up and down the street to the park.  And I will always be happy to be known as the mom with the good snacks. #goals

Muddy Buddies or Puppy Chow?

This popular Midwestern American snack goes by both “Muddy Buddies” and “Puppy Chow.”  In fact, some people even call it Reindeer Chow!  I’ve always liked the name Muddy Buddies best, so that’s what we call it in our house.  What’s more important than it’s name is it’s taste, and it is yummy!  What do you call it?

How do you make Muddy Buddies?

Muddy Buddies are a simple treat to make, and a great recipe for kids to try.  Simply melt nut butter and chocolate chips together, and pour over square shaped cereal (you can use different types of cereals, just make sure that you choose something large enough to eat as finger food).  Give it a good stir to coat the cereal pieces as well as possible.  (I skip the traditional butter in favor of a little more almond butter.  I find that it’s not that much harder to stir, and the butter isn’t really needed.)  Then pour a heaping cup of powdered sugar over the chocolately mix and give it a good shake!  I put mine in a glass container with a lid so I can shake, shake, shake!  To elevate this kid favorite snack a bit more I add sliced almonds to mine.

Peanut Free Muddy Buddies!

Jonny is allergic to peanuts, so we are always swapping out the peanut butter in recipes with almond butter!  I took this one to the next level by adding almond extract and sliced almonds for an extra treat.  My favorite almond butter is Barney Butter.  It’s the smoothest, silkiest almond butter I’ve ever had, and it’s made in a peanut free facility.  To make this recipe entirely nut free swap in sunbutter for the almond butter, and skip the extract and the almonds.

Jonny asked me to keep an eye on his stuffed bunny the other day while he was at school—because even though he’s a big kid he’s still my baby—and I couldn’t resist popping her into a picture to show him, a la Flat Stanley.  Maybe we should call this Bunny Chow?

Almond Butter Muddy Buddies

These almond butter Muddy Buddies are a peanut free version of this favorite snack!  Sweet, chocolatey, and crunchy, it's sure to be enjoyed by your whole family!
Prep Time5 minutes mins
Cook Time2 minutes mins
Total Time7 minutes mins
Course: Dessert, Snack
Cuisine: American
Keyword: Kid Friendly
Servings: 20 servings
Author: Sarah

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup almond butter (I like Barney Butter)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (I like Enjoy Life)
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 9 cups square shaped cereal (see notes)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (heaping cup)
  • 1 cup sliced almonds

Instructions

  • Place the almond butter and chocolate chips in a large bowl.
  • Microwave for 1 minute. Give the mixture a good stir. Microwave for 30 more seconds.
  • Remove the mixture from the microwave. Add the almond extract to the mixture and stir well.
  • Pour 9 cups of cereal into the mixture. Working quickly, stir to coat completely (I like to stir with a silicone spatula and then put the container lid on and shake well too).
  • Once the mixture is coated, shake the powdered sugar on top of the cereal. Put the lid back onto the container and shake again, covering all of the cereal.
  • Add the sliced almonds and give it one more stir.
  • Serve and enjoy! Store in a sealed container for up to a week.

Notes

Some cereals, like Rice Chex, contain Vitamin D3.  If you avoid this, you can use other vegan square shaped cereals.
