A Perfect Classroom Gift

My little elf David and I have been busy in our kitchen workshop creating Christmas goodies!  Our most recent creation is our Marshmallow Swizzle Sticks!  I have always liked the idea of giving jars of hot chocolate mix, but I needed something small that I could distribute to all of the kids in David’s class.  And his amazing teachers.  And the other teachers in his school—we love them all!  And his swim teacher.  And soccer coach.  And Jonathan’s swim teacher.  And the list was getting longer and longer!  We needed something a little easier, and a little smaller!

And this is how Marshmallow Swizzle Sticks were born.  Simply stir your stick into a cup of piping hot milk and let the chocolate and marshmallows melt.  Instant hot chocolate!

Lots of Flavor Combinations

We chose to do Chocolate Orange and White Chocolate Peppermint, but you could do just about any flavor combination!  We garnished our Chocolate Orange sticks with sprinkles, and used crushed candy canes to decorate our White Chocolate Peppermint sticks.

Gift Wrapping your Marshmallow Swizzle Sticks (FREE Printable)

I tried a couple of different candy bags from the craft store and none of them fit quite right.  Too big, too short, too skinny.  The best and easiest option ended up being a piece of plastic wrap!  I tied these with a ribbon and labeled them with a gift tag that has instructions on it.  And I’ve made a print out for you too!  Simply print the two pages back to back and cut out.  We printed on some fun cardstock and they look great!

Side note: I’ve been on a white chocolate kick lately and I blame Cara at Fork and Beans!  I get the King David brand on Amazon.  I prefer the coins, but the white chocolate chips work too.

Ingredients

Chocolate Orange, makes about 15

  • 10 ounces chocolate chips (I like Enjoy Life brand)
  • 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • sprinkles for decorating
  • 30 marshmallows (I like Dandies brand)
  • 15 6" white lollipop sticks (purchase at your local craft store)

White Chocolate Peppermint, makes about 15

  • 10 ounces white chocolate chips/discs (I like King David brand)
  • 1/2 - 1 teaspoon coconut oil (note, I use more coconut oil with the white chocolate than I do with the dark chocolate)
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • crushed candy canes for decorating
  • 30 marshmallows (I like Dandies brand)
  • 15 6" white lollipop sticks  (purchase at your local craft store)

Instructions

  • Line a large jelly roll pan with parchment paper.  Skewer the marshmallows through the middle, 2 per stick.  Set the sticks on the pan and set aside.
  • Set up a double boiler on the stove.  I place a small sauce pan on the stove and fill it with a few inches of water.  Then I place a glass heat safe bowl on top (make sure the water isn’t touching the bowl).  Then I heat it on medium low heat—do not let the water boil.
  • Place chocolate in the bowl (either white or dark).  Stir occasionally.  Once chocolate is melted, add coconut oil and stir well.  Then add the extract and mix once more.
  • Begin to dip the marshmallows. I like to lower them into the bowl, one stick at a time, and use the spoon to scoop up the chocolate onto the sides of the marshmallow.  Start with a thin coat (you will dip a second time).  Using the spoon, wipe away any drips and carefully set the stick down on the parchment, setting down without moving to prevent a foot from forming.  Repeat with all remaining sticks, you will not use all of the chocolate.  Set the tray into the freezer for 10 minutes to let the chocolate set.
  • Remove the tray from the freezer.  Repeat the dipping process, using the spoon to coat each marshmallow.  This time, sprinkle with sprinkles or candy canes before setting back down on the tray—I like to hold the stick over the bowl or sprinkles and turn it in one hand while sprinkling with the other.
  • Once you've dipped and sprinkled all of the sticks return the tray to the freezer for 10 minutes.  Once the chocolate is set you can wrap the sticks—I prefer plastic wrap.  Store the wrapped sticks in the refrigerator to prevent melting.

To serve:

  • Heat 8 ounces of milk in a microwave safe cup until it reaches 160°.  This takes about 90 seconds in my microwave.  Then stir your stick into the milk—it will slowly melt and the flavor will impart throughout the milk.  You can use a spoon to coax the chocolate into the milk to help it melt faster.  Then sip and enjoy!
